Tips and Tricks of Beauty Blogging and Lessons Learned

Recently I have been getting quite a few emails from people who either want to start a beauty blog or recently started one and are asking me for some tips.
As weird as it is for me to believe, I am considered a veteran now since I have been blogging three years next month! Time flies.
I actually wrote a two-part series on this very topic back in 2009 here and here, but I’ve learned quite a bit since then so I figured it was time for an update. Also that post is extremely detailed and assumes you don’t necessarily even have a blog name yet.
Why start a beauty blog?
This is probably the very first question you should ask yourself. Why are you starting this type of blog? Is it because you love makeup? Is it because you are bored and want a hobby? Do you love writing? Are you looking for free products? Do you want recognition from companies and cool invites to events?
The very best reason to start a beauty blog in my opinion is because you LOVE beauty/makeup and want to create something. I started this site because I love makeup, love writing and wanted a hobby I would stick with.
The worst reason to start one is for free products or some kind of recognition. More on that later…
How do I get people to come to my site?
Post! A lot! No really, posting frequently and consistently is definitely one of the keys to getting people to come back over and over.
Commenting on other people’s blogs is another good way to get noticed, but it’s a tricky one. You don’t want to just randomly go to blogs and leave generic comments just to get noticed. Only visit blogs you would normally be reading even if you weren’t blogging yourself, and leave comments that actually mean something. In other words not just “Nice” or “Cool post”. Try to add value to the post and you might even get a conversation going. Meaningless link dropping will definitely get you noticed, but not for the right reasons, and I frequently will trash those types of comments if they are left on my blog.
Twitter is KEY in growing your blog. KEY!! Basically if you are a blogger you have to have a Twitter account these days. Twitter has been at the #5 or 6 spot in my Google Analytics for how people find me for well over a year now. Twitter is also a great and fun way to “meet” other beauty bloggers and get in contact with companies and PR people.
Writing a guest posts for other blogs can be a great way to get some blogging experience as well as get you noticed. I did a few posts for a large beauty blog a few years ago and that definitely helped me gain readers. But again, don’t just offer to write for just anyone, chose a blog you love and pitch a topic to them that fits in with what they normally blog about.
How can I get companies and PR people to send me review samples?
I mentioned above that you don’t ever want to start your blog with the sole purpose of getting free samples. It’s very obvious when people are only blogging for free products and believe me, companies and PR folks can spot this behavior a mile away. It just doesn’t work that way.
You have to work hard for a long time to establish yourself get to know people via Twitter/Facebook/Commenting on other people’s sites before you can begin to think of PR samples. I think a good rule of thumb is you should be blogging at least 9-12 months before approaching anyone for samples, and be prepared to show your site analytics.
There is no set in stone rule about what companies are looking for when they send samples, so that can be tricky. Some look for your actual website statistics like Google Analytics to see how many people visit your site. Some want to see how many people follow you on Twitter and/or Facebook. Some are interested in seeing how many people comment on your site. Some won’t ever tell you what they are looking for or respond back to you. Annoying perhaps, but that’s the reality.
Something else to keep in mind is companies won’t always contact you, sometimes you need to take it into your own hands and contact them. I would say at least 50% of the companies I work with I contacted first. But I waited until I was more established and had a few posts I could show them before I would reach out.
A really good way to ensure you won’t get samples sent to you is to complain about not getting samples in a public forum like Twitter. You have to remember to stay professional if you want to work with professional companies. Also remember when you complain about a particular company publicly, all the other companies who follow you will see that and trust me, they will take note and get turned off. There are plenty of bloggers who act in a professional manner that they would rather give samples to!
I will admit though that it’s harder than ever to get the attention of companies, even for more established blogs. There are SO many beauty and nail bloggers out there now. You have to stand out, do something that makes you different from every other blog yet still always be yourself.
A harsh fact is a lot of this world revolves around who you know. It isn’t always about who works the hardest, or writes the best posts, takes the best photos or whatever. It can be really disheartening and frustrating, but you have to just move on and keep your chin up!
One way to start meeting these people though is to attend blogging conventions and events such as Blogher, Cosmoprof, IMATS and the like. That way at least you are getting out there and possibly meeting the PR people and those who work at various companies you are interested in working with.
When you work your butt off and are serious about what you do it will show and things will eventually fall into place.
What about all the technical stuff, what do I need to know?
Part of blogging is always growing and learning new things. When I look back on posts from my first year of blogging I cannot believe how much I have improved! Especially the photos, I did NOT know what I was doing back then!
I took a bunch of classes in things I was interested in like Photoshop and Illustrator but also read a ton of books about photography and blogging and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) when I started.
You don’t have to have a super expensive DSLR camera to take great photos, but it definitely won’t hurt. The most important things are learning about lighting and how to take macro shots if you’re doing up close product photos. I have a lot to learn still, but have improved even from 6 months ago.
I use a Canon Rebel T1i for my photos usually with the Canon 58mm Close-up Lens. For product shots and swatches (non-nail) I use a tabletop photo studio and some fairly inexpensive umbrella lights. For nail shots I do them indoors with a flash. I used to take them outside in the sun but found that was more work and way too unreliable.
How time intensive is beauty blogging?
It all depends on why you are doing it, how often you post and what types of posts you are doing.
For me this is pretty much my life outside of my 4 day work-week. I spend a good 25-30 hours per week on my site and that’s on top of working 32 hours a week in a normal job. I could easily do this full time if I wasn’t working also. This is what I want to do for a living and I am determined to somehow make it work! Keep in mind though that I post 2-3 posts per day during the week and then usually 2 on the weekend, so your schedule might not be that crazy.
But if that’s not your thing, then that’s totally cool also. It can be as much or as little as you want, but the more you post, usually the more followers you will have.
How do you handle other people’s successes when you seem to be getting nowhere?
This is definitely an issue we can ALL relate to, I don’t care how large or small your blog is. At some point in time the green eyed monster will raise its ugly head at someone else’s success.
Every now and then you will hear about other people getting press or a really cool opportunity and think, “Man, why didn’t I get asked to do that?” It can sting. Been there done that a million times.
I try my best to look at it objectively though. They weren’t rejecting ME they were accepting THEM. It’s not personal. Frequently those whose names you hear about the most who have the most readers will get the better opportunities. It’s the way it works pretty much everywhere in the world, not just in beauty blogging. And that comes back to the whole “It’s who you know” thing, which there isn’t much we can do about.
What I do when this happens to me is wallow in it for a short period of time, maybe commiserate with a friend then move on. The best thing you can do is keep your nose to the grindstone and keep on posting.
There is a reason my motto, which can be seen all over my house and various items I own, is Keep Calm and Carry On.
Why do I keep blogging?
When I started blogging back on September 7th, 2008, it was kind of a test for me. Part of the reason I started was because I was bored to DEATH in my daily administrative job (still am) which allows for zero creativity. Also, I had been searching for years for a hobby that I actually would fall in love with and stick with. I tried everything from jewelry making to scrapbooking to creating models, to World of Warcraft, etc. Some of these didn’t even last past me buying the stuff to start the project!
So when I started this blog I wondered seriously how long it would last. But it kept lasting and lasting and I didn’t seem to tire of it. After a good 6 months of doing it I kind of knew that this wasn’t just a hobby anyore, it was something I really enjoyed and now needed to do to add some fun and creativity into my life.
There have been moments where I have been frustrated with something or totally overwhelmed because I try to keep up with people who actually blog for a living and I think, “Ok I’m done.” But that feeling goes away usually after a couple minutes to a day, then I get back on the horse and push on.
Now I blog because A. I love it B. I want to do this for a living and C. I love interacting with people all over the world!
Thanks to all of you who have visited my site and gotten some useful information out of it, or chuckled at something I wrote. It wouldn’t be the same if I had no readers. You are what keeps it interesting and fun!

Essential WordPress Security Tips – Is Your Blog Protected

I have been revisiting the various security settings of my WordPress blog after the sudden database table corruption of this blog for unknown reason last week. In this post I have highlighted some of the security tips that can help protect your blog from possible outside attacks.
Use Strong Passwords for all Entry Points

I was surprised to find out how many of my friends use the WordPress admin password generated by WordPress during install time and thinks that their blog is protected from attacks as they are using a strong password! The WordPress admin password generated during install time is normally pretty strong (consists lowercase and uppercase letters with numbers and symbols) so there is nothing wrong with that. I was mainly shocked to find out that their ftp/cPanel password for that domain is not that strong. It gets even better… one of them were using his partners name as the password (Did I mention that his partner’s name was mentioned on his blog’s ‘About’ page?)! The ftp/cPanel password for your domain is equally important. If someone can access your cPanel then that person can delete your WordPress database from the cPanel->Databases->MySQL Databases. Anyway, the bottom line is to use strong passwords for all entry points not just one.
Protect the ‘wp-admin’ Directory
Use a .htaccess file in the ‘wp-admin’ directory to limit access to only certain IP addresses (your home, work etc). The WordPress htaccess tips post has more htaccess related tips and tricks. Below is an example .htaccess file that can be used for this purpose (replace ‘x’ and ‘y’ with your IP address)
AuthUserFile /dev/null
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName “Access Control”
AuthType Basic
order deny,allow
deny from all
# whitelist home IP address
allow from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
# whitelist work IP address
allow from yy.yyy.yyy.yyy
If you don’t have static IP addresses then the above method can be a bit hard to implement. In that case I would recommend the use of AskApache Password Protect WordPress plugin. The ‘AskApache Password Protect’ plugin adds some serious password protection to your WordPress Blog. Not only does it protect your ‘wp-admin’ directory, but also your wp-includes, wp-content, plugins, etc. Use the Login Lockdown Plugin to protect your blog against brute force attack (a brute force attack is a method of defeating a cryptographic scheme by systematically trying a large number of possibilities)
Deny access to your Plugins and other directories
A lot of bloggers don’t protect access to their WordPress plugins directory. What I mean by this is that if you go to the www.your-domain.com/wp-content/plugins/ from a browser it shows all the plugins that you are using. Many wordpress plugins can have vulnerabilities which the attacker can use to harm your blog. So, its a good idea to block access to these directories. You can use a .htaccess file or just upload a blank ‘index.html’ file to that directory to block access to these directories. (download a blank index.html)
Update WordPress to the Latest Release
As new WrodPress versions are released the security bugs for previous release becomes public information. WordPress could have vulnerabilities as a result of how the program is written that allow an attacker to pass HTTP arguments, bad URI strings, form input, etc, that could cause Bad Things to happen. So always upate your WordPress to the latest version to make sure that you are protected against any known security bugs.
Don’t Show WordPress Version on Your Blog
You should not make the WordPress version that you are using visible to others for the same reason explained above. The specific WordPress version that you are using can give the attacker an upper hand in finding a way to break in.

Enhance Your Blog With These Tips And Tricks

f you desire to create a blog, you must try to make a theme in relation to your content. If readers like those posts on your blog, they will be likely to come back and read more of your work. No matter what topic interests you, it is possible to craft an engaging, appealing blog.
Commenting on other people’s blogs is an excellent method of raising interest in your own blog. Google Reader has an excellent tool for keeping tabs on blogs that are related to your own. Make comments anytime you’d like to say something.
Blog often and blog smartly. The biggest problem with new blogs is infrequent posts. Readers whose interest is gained at first will become bored waiting for continuations or updated articles. At a minimum, try to post a new blog every week. In addition, send out frequent emails updating your readers on your content.
Do not copy other people’s articles. Plagiarism is dishonest, and it is the surest way to ruin your reputation and destroy any chance you have of creating a popular blog. While even an amateur writer can find success in blog posting, showing your passion through unique content is the only way to reach your goals.
Create a blog that stands out from all the other blogs that already exist. Readers flock to content that they can’t find anywhere else. Visitors will also be drawn to rare material. Blog about hobbies or experiences that are unique. Share your own expertise into a process or job that most people make money blogging know less about. Doing this will encourage readers to visit your blog when they’re trying to find information on something specific.
Embed pictures into your posts. Do you believe in the idea that a photo can tell a story more effectively than words? This is very true when it’s applied to blogging. Pictures can say much more than words can. Therefore, include images as often as you can.
Use lists in your blog posts. Lists are essential no matter the topic, from toys of the 1990s to ethical business practices. Lists provide information in a format that is easy to view and also easy to understand.
Make the appropriate social network links available, so readers can follow your blog. Using LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and other popular social networks will make you much more visible in the blogosphere, as well as improve your profits. These sites will give you many opportunities to interact with your site visitors and attract more readers.
Keep your blog in good health. Perform any necessary maintenance tasks and make changes when warranted. This will ensure that your readers have easy access to your site and will keep them coming back.
So long as you are creating unique and insightful content on your blog, you have the potential to provide a valuable resource to your readers. Posting things like pictures, videos and quotes from knowledgeable people will interest your readers. Make use of this article’s advice to give yourself the best shot at success.

5 Professional Blogging Tips and Tricks for Beginners 2013

If you are just a beginner of blogging or working as a team to Make Money Online, it can be tremendous. You need to choose a blogging platform, get your blog set up, make regular posts, check for remarks from users, make sure your links are working, and focus to a hundred other particulars. If you don’t know what to do and what to avoid, blogging can be complicated at best and entirely frustrating at worst. Following are the tips and tricks for beginners to turn your blog into something you can be proud of.

Choose a platform you can learn easily.
Before choosing any platform research very carefully. Don’t choose a popular platform just because of its popularity. Also consider your expertise, shop around and discover a blogging program that is simple and easy to use. Look for technical support in case you get stuck.
Select a format that doesn't require a lot of technical changes or adjustments.
Select an easy blog template that does not need a lot of modifications. If you find one you certainly like, you don’t even need to make any changes. Stay away from template that need many changes or else you will find yourself with a blog that is not working after a few wrong keystrokes.
Back up your blog.
Backing up your blog should be something you do often. If something happens with the server or you unintentionally delete your own blog (it’s been known to happen), you won’t spend days or weeks trying to start a new one or put the old one back together.
Write posts on topics relevant to your business.
If you are the proprietor of a widget shop, you don’t need to write every single post about widgets themselves. However, you should write about topics related to the business of making widgets. You can write about bookkeeping for widget companies, how to use widgets, the types of challenges presently facing widget companies, and other related topics. Relevance is much important for getting targeted search engine like Google traffic to visit your blog.

Choose a platform you can learn easily.

Include links to other sites and affiliate products only if they're relevant to the blog topic.

Relevancy is important for maintaining the credibility of your business. A secretarial blog with links to tax information and a book called “Bookkeeping for Beginners” for sale is good. A bookkeeping blog with links to gardening websites and a video on bookkeeping for sale is not. Keep your blog relevant for your readers and they will be more likely to visit again.
Bonus Tip:
If you are having complexity with your blog, hire an expert blogging advisor. The expense of the assistance of an expert blogger will pay for itself many times over with the time and revenue you save on blog setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Blogging Tips and Tricks to Keep You Sane

Have you ever tried to tell your son’s school teacher that the reason why you can’t volunteer at the latest fun raiser is because you have to blog?
Apart from the blank stare that you’d most likely get, you would then have to explain yourself, become defensive and go away feeling very guilty, or carry a list of stuff that you ended up saying yes to.
Try telling the teacher you have other commitments that you simply can’t get out of.
One of your not-so-close friends is having a casual get together? Tell her you have some work-related stuff to do.
If the world is going to pretend that I, as a blogger, don’t have kids, I am going to pretend I have imaginary work-related commitments.
Think of the whole process as trying to save yourself the guilt trip and spare others trying to understand what blogging is. Tell people who do understand, by all means; they probably will get it anyway.
Appliances are your best friends
I don’t have a dishwasher in my house. For one, I don’t have the space for it, but the real reason is that I really don’t mind doing the dishes. This is almost a mind-cleansing activity for me.
The fact that I don’t have to use my brain to wash the dishes keeps my hands occupied while I have the time to clear my head and sort through things. I often get my best ideas when I am doing the dishes, and often go away (happily at that) to jot ideas.
But you might hate it! And that’s even more the reason to get a trusted dishwasher, if you haven’t already. While you’re in the process, get yourself a dryer, a weekly cleaning service (if you can afford it), kids’ car pools etc. Do your grocery shopping online. Let kids become a part of the solution—assign them some basic chores.
Outsource as many things that don’t require you personally to get done. This can save you valuable time.
My most favorite—TV, of course! Although use it with caution, and use sparingly. A close second is take-away one week night so I don’t have to worry about cooking for that night.
Get some help from Dad
Nothing beats a hands-on Dad. Get his help with various chores and kids activities.
Get him to cook one night of the week. Ask him to take the kids for their weekend sports. Ask him to do the night-time-bath-and-story-book thing once a week. Is he naturally more chatty, more outgoing than you are? Swap roles of being a “school mum.”
Is he stronger than you? Of course he is—remind him of this when he is grumbling about mopping the floors!
Be flexible
The only way a mum can survive as a blogger is to be as flexible as possible. You will miss out on a lot if you don’t.
There will always be things related to your kids and your household that you would have to do first. You won’t be able to write if your four-year-old is screaming for Spaghetti Bolognese right now. You won’t be able to write if your kid is at home sick—or your partner is home sick behaving like one.
Making an occasional batch of cupcakes with your kids will earn you serious brownie points and will go a long way in creating a harmonious relationship. Hopefully, they will then take a long time to eat those cupcakes as you sit down to write.
Just relax and look at a problematic situation differently. And be flexible.
Live one life
If your blog permits it, bring your children in the picture. Let them sprinkle their magic on your blog.
Then turn around the do the same for them—let your kids see you work. Show them you are as proud of your blog as you are of them. They may not understand it if they are little, but they will get used to see you do other things beside cook and clean.
Just the other day, my four-year-old told his older brother, “stop blogging me!” That lead to great laughter all around. He might not know what blogging is—he probably thinks it a synonym for “blocking”—but at least he is aware of the lingo. Many adults still aren’t.
Put on your oxygen mask first
How many times have you heard that happy parents make for a happy household?
Well, that is in fact the truth. Taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of others. Do the things that really make you happy. This doesn’t make you selfish. Think of it as an investment. When you invest in yourself, your family reaps the rewards.
If blogging inspires you, by all means do it. Remember that you would have to prioritize some time for yourself, otherwise you will never be able to get it done.
Every time I complete my blogging goals for the day, I feel on top of the world. I am a happier mum, I am a joy to be around, and my kids love me even more.
You don’t have to be a poster parent
Resist to be a contestant for the race of being the Best Mum in the world. There are plenty of things you can do without:
You don’t have to bring adorable, homemade snacks to your kids’ school. Realize that you can buy cookies from the supermarket and nobody will really care.
You don’t have to have your house in tip-top condition. Well in case nobody ever told you, kids are messy: they make a mess everywhere they go! Must you clean after them all day long? Avoid doing activities that lead to even more messes, especially when you are running short on time.
Ironing your family’s PJ’s? Hello!
A blogging parent and pedestal parent are not mutually exclusive. Stop comparing yourself with others. Aim for “good enough.”
Find a great blogging partner

While it sounds fantastic to have some real-life friends who are mums and bloggers on top of it, it’s very unlikely you will magically discover them.
I am very lucky to have a best friend who actually encouraged me to take up blogging in the first place. She is the most wonderful person to talk about my blogging “habit,” as even my husband struggles be understanding sometimes.
Find yourself other blogger mums online, take your time time to get to know them and then befriend one or two as real friends—not just the networking sort of friend. You will sleep better knowing you have one person who “gets it!”
Blogger mums and dads, what tips and tricks can you add to this list? Share them with us in the comments.

Reduce Your Blog Bounce Rate

For that, we need to know what exactly this Bounce Rate means? Everyday some new visitors come to the blog, some come through search engines and some come through links or references. However some or most of the visitors leave your blog as they land on it. They leave your blog by simply closing it down or by hitting the back button.
What can be the reasons for it?
The content is not relevant to the search term that brought them to your blog.
The information provided on the site is not that useful.
The site is not appealing enough to grab the attention of the visitor.
The load time of the site is very slow.
How To Track The Bounce Rate
One can track the blog’s bounce rate by signing up for Google Analytics. They will provide you with the tracking code which you need to add to all the blog pages. This will provide you with all the tracking data in your analytics account dashboard.
The formula used for calculating Bounce Rate is
Bounce Rate = Total single page view visits / Total number of visits.
So, what do you do to reduce the bounce rate? i.e. the number of people leaving the blog. Try some tips and tricks to make your blog more practical and useful to the visitors. Improve the blog quality to persuade people to spend time on your blog. Each and every single visitor is important and valuable for your blog and your blogging business. Mentioned below are few tips, which might be useful to make your blog effective and valuable for your visitors.
How To Reduce Your Blog Bounce Rate
1. Make Your Blog User Friendly
In order to reduce Bounce rate of your blog, the first thing you need to make your blog user friendly. A well user friendly blog gets more reader attention and they want to spend more time over there. Make navigation system of your blog simple. This will make it easier for your blog readers to get easily, what they are searching for.
2. Write Simple Content
If you want your blog visitors to read your blog post and spent time on it, you must write your blog post simple and use clear titles for theme. Try to write in simple English, Provide information in simplest way, use relevant images in your post.
3. Interlink Your Blog Post
Interlinking of your blog post is best way to reduce bounce rate of your blog. It will not only improve your blog bounce rate but also helps your blog SEO by passing link juice and anchor text benefits. It helps your blog readers to read another article on your blog. They like to click internal links on blog post to read many other related articles of your blog. It’s good to interlinking your blog post, but don’t put too many links for the sake of interlinking.
4Use Relevant Categories For Blog Post

It lets your visitor to read more articles under same category by just clicking on a category or tag link. So it’s always a good idea to use relevant categories for your blog post.
