Bloggers declared the documents to be forgeries and presented evidence and arguments in support of that view. Consequently, CBS apologized for what it said were inadequate reporting techniques . Usenet was the primary serial medium included in the original definition of the Internet. It featured the moderated newsgroup which allowed all posting in a newsgroup to be under the control of an individual or small group. Most such newsgroups were simply moderated discussion forums, however, in late 1983, mod.ber, was created, named after and managed by Brian E. Redman; he, and a few associates regularly posted summaries of interesting postings and threads taking place elsewhere on the net. Another moderated newsgroup, rec.humor.funny  started on August 7, 1987, and remain active as of 2011.In the early 1990s, when Tim Berners-Lee coined the term "world wide web" and defined the first standards for HTML and URLs, the specifications included "USENET newsgroups for serial publishing and discussions.

Dumb Bulk Email Blunders for Blogger

Not saying anything. You’re just sending an email because you think it’s time and you don’t work on your message long enough. Don’t waste your readers’ time.
Saying too much. If you haven’t sent an email update in awhile, it’s tempting to try to catch up with all that’s been going on. Don’t do that to your poor readers. That’s what blogs and Facebook pages are for. Get to the point in your email.
Apologizing for not staying in touch. Really? Do you think we missed another email in our inboxes? Don’t apologize, just get to the point. In the future, when you promise to send a monthly missive, keep that promise unless you have extenuating circumstances (always understandable and forgiven).
Putting your entire list in the TO or the CC line. Every time you do this, you share email addresses with everyone on your list and risk pissing people off (sorry, there’s no nicer way to say it). Use the Bcc line!
Using a dull or trite subject line. Your subject line encourages people to open an email – or not. Vary your subject line and compel us to open what’s inside.
Bunching up all of your text. Your message should be scannable. Use 1-2 short sentences per paragraph, add subheadings, and bold important points. (See how I’ve done it in this post?)
Sending images that are too large and take a long time to download.
Putting all of your message in an attachment. Rule: Attachments are bonuses. They support the message, but they don’t replace it. ALL images are attachments. Even though they look great on your screen, they might show up as a big red X and an attachment in someone else’s inbox. If you want people to open the attachment, you have to give them reason to do so. Put all of the details in the message itself.
Not using precise locations. Remember that email messages go out to the world – not just your local audience. Don’t forget to add the name of the town, the city, and perhaps the country. Saying “It’s near the mall” doesn’t mean anything to your readers if they don’t know your town and aren’t anywhere near you.
Sending your bulk email message to anyone who didn’t request it. If you’re sending your email to people who didn’t opt in to your list you risk violating the CAN SPAM laws. More importantly, you risk alienating potential fans. Nobody appreciates receiving bulk email that they didn’t subscribe to.
There must be more. Maybe you know of a #11. Please share it with us in a comment.
Correct any of the above blunders you might be making and you’re on your way to mastering email marketing for your art.
Amazon SES is not an email service like Exchange or Gmail. It’s designed for people who want to send email marketing and other similar types of bulk email. The Amazon newsletter is a good example.
SES is therefore Amazon’s equivalent of  services such as AWeber and Mailchimp. But SES doesn’t provide newsletter management as such: it is strictly an outgoing mail server for sending legitimate bulk email.
As a customer, you’d have to create the list, develop the mailing and send it.
Bearing this in mind, SES is for clients with very large bulk mailing needs that have the expertise to do most of the work themselves. The majority of hosting customers won’t use it. But SES could be incredibly useful to corporate customers.

Great Online Courses For Blogging

Much ado has been made in recent years over the quickly rising cost of healthcare in the United States. But the cost of college tuition and fees has skyrocketed at nearly twice that rate. Going to college today will cost a student 559% more than it did in 1985, on average.
In an exciting talk given at TEDGlobal 2012, Stanford professor Daphne Koller explains why she was inspired — alongside fellow professor Andrew Ng — to create Coursera, which brings great classes from top universities online for free. Coursera classes have specific start dates, require students to take quizzes and turn in assignments, as well as allowing professors to customize their course into online chunks rather than simply recording their lectures.
Blogging for Business ClassesWhen she spoke at TED Global, Coursera offered classes from four top colleges — Princeton University, the University of Michigan, Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania — but in July, Coursera announced that they had increased to 16 participating colleges, including five of the schools considered the top 10 in the country by the U.S. News & World Report. The site now offers 116 classes.
Even outside of Coursera, the number of college classes available on a computer screen rather than in a brick-and-mortar lecture hall is staggering. At TEDxEastside Prep, Scott Young gave the intriguing talk — “Can you get an MIT education for $2,000?” — in which he shared his effort to get an MIT education in computer science by taking the school’s Open Courseware free online courses. The result? He’s currently taken — as well as passed exams and completed programming assignments for –  20 of the 33 courses in schools’ curriculum.
Inspired by Young, below, find 12 courses you could take for a completely free TED degree in Big Ideas.
The Course: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
The School: Stanford, via YouTube
Taught By: Peter Norvig, Sebastian Thrun
Course Description: Artificial Intelligence is the science of making computer software that reasons about the world around it. Humanoid robots, Google Goggles, self-driving cars, even software that suggests music you might like to hear are all examples of AI. In this class, you will learn how to create this software from two of the leaders in the field.
Notes: When Thrun and Norvig first put this course online in the fall of 2011, 160,000 students from 209 countries enrolled. While the course is closed, you can still watch the lectures on YouTube. And see Norvig discuss what he learned teaching the course in the TEDTalk, “The 100,000 student classroom.”
The Course: The Structure of English Words
The School: Stanford, via iTunes
Taught By: Will Leben
Course Description: Thanks to historical, cultural, and linguistic factors, English has by far the world’s largest vocabulary—leading many of us to have greater than average difficulty with words, and some of us to have greater than average curiosity about words. Our historical and linguistic study will cover both erudite and everyday English, with special attention to word meaning and word use, to both rules and exceptions. Most words originated with an image. “Reveal” = “pull back the veil,” “depend” = “hang down from.” Change is constant. “Girl” once meant “a young child of either sex;” an early synonym for “stupid” was “nice.” Are there good changes and bad ones? And who gets to decide?

The Course: Physics for Future Presidents
The School: University of California Berkeley, via YouTube
Taught By: Richard A. Muller and Bob Jacobsen
Course Description: Contains the essential physics that students need in order to understand today’s core science and technology issues, and to become the next generation of world leaders. From the physics of energy to climate change, and from spy technology to quantum computers, this is a look at the modern physics affecting the decisions of political leaders and CEOs and, consequently, the lives of every citizen. How practical are alternative energy sources? Can satellites really read license plates from space? What is the quantum physics behind iPods and supermarket scanners? And how much should we fear a terrorist nuke?”
Note: A complete guide is available to anyone who wants to teach the class at their university.
The Course: Dilemmas in Bio-Medical Ethics: Playing God or Doing Good?
The School: MIT, via Open Courseware
Taught By: Erica James
Course Description: This course is an introduction to the cross-cultural study of bio-medical ethics. It examines moral foundations of the science and practice of western bio-medicine through case studies of abortion, contraception, cloning, organ transplantation, and other issues. It also evaluates challenges that new medical technologies pose to the practice and availability of medical services around the globe, and to cross-cultural ideas of kinship and personhood. It discusses critiques of the bio-medical tradition from anthropological, feminist, legal, religious, and cross-cultural theorists.
The Course: Videogame Theory and Analysis
The School: MIT, via Open Courseware
Taught By: Alice Robison
Course Description: This course will serve as an introduction to the interdisciplinary academic study of videogames, examining their cultural, educational, and social functions in contemporary settings. By playing, analyzing, and reading and writing about videogames, we will examine debates surrounding how they function within socially situated contexts in order to better understand games’ influence on and reflections of society.
The Course: ets, Counting and Probability
The School: Harvard, via the Open Learning Initiative
Taught By: Paul G. Bamberg
Course Description: This online math course develops the mathematics needed to formulate and analyze probability models for idealized situations drawn from everyday life. Topics include elementary set theory, techniques for systematic counting, axioms for probability, conditional probability, discrete random variables, infinite geometric series, and random walks. Applications to card games like bridge and poker, to gambling, to sports, to election results, and to inference in fields like history and genealogy, national security, and theology.
The Course: Introduction to Aerospace Engineering and Design
The School: MIT, via Open Courseware
Taught By: Dava Newman
Course Description: The fundamental concepts, and approaches of aerospace engineering, are highlighted through lectures on aeronautics, astronautics, and design. Active learning aerospace modules make use of information technology. Student teams are immersed in a hands-on, lighter-than-air (LTA) vehicle design project, where they design, build, and fly radio-controlled LTA vehicles. The connections between theory and practice are realized in the design exercises.
The Course: Shakespeare After All: The Later Plays
The School: Harvard
Taught By: Marjorie Garber
Course Description: This free online Shakespeare course focuses on Shakespeare’s later plays beginning with Measure for Measure and ending with The Tempest. This course takes note of key themes, issues, and interpretations of the plays, focusing on questions of genre, gender, politics, family relations, silence and speech, and cultural power from both above and below (royalty, nobility, and the court; clowns and fools).

The Course: Securing Digital Democracy
The School: University of Michigan, via Coursera
Taught By: J. Alex Halderman
Course Description: Computer technology has transformed how we participate in democracy. The way we cast our votes, the way our votes are counted, and the way we choose who will lead are increasingly controlled by invisible computer software. Most U.S. states have adopted electronic voting, and countries around the world are starting to collect votes over the Internet. However, computerized voting raises startling security risks that are only beginning to be understood outside the research lab, from voting machine viruses that can silently change votes to the possibility that hackers in foreign countries could steal an election. This course will provide the technical background and public policy foundation that 21st century citizens need to understand the electronic voting debate. You’ll come away from this course understanding why you can be confident your own vote will count — or why you should reasonably be skeptical.
The Course: Galaxies and Cosmology
The School: California Institute of Technology, via Coursera

How to Boost Blog Traffic with Keyword Writing and SEO 2013 Update

One of the biggest sources of traffic to your blog will be search engines, particularly Google.  You can boost the traffic that comes to your blogs from search engines by implementing search engine optimization (SEO) tricks into your blog layout and writing

Use keywords in your blog post title.
One of the best ways to incorporate keywords into your blog posts is to use them in your blog post titles.  However, don't sacrifice a title's ability to motivate people to click through and read your entire blog post.  Learn 3 tips to write great blog post titles..  You can get started by doing some keyword research and determining which keywords are likely to drive the most traffic to your blog.  Then focus on incorporating those keywords into your blog posts using the tricks below.
Focus on using just one or two keyword phrases in each blog post.
To maximize the traffic that comes to your blog via search engines, focus on optimizating each of your blog posts for just one or two keyword phrases.  Too many keyword phrases dilutes the content of your post for readers and can look like spam to both readers and search engines.  You can learn more about using specific keywords to maximize search traffic by reading about long tail search engine optimization.
Use keywords in and around links in your blog post.
Search engine optimzation experts believe that search engines like Google place more weight on linked text than unlinked text when ranking search engine results.  Therefore, it's a good idea to include your keywords in or next to the links within your blog posts when it's relevant to do so.  Be sure to read about how many links are too many for SEO before you start adding links to your posts.
 Use keywords in image Alt-tags.
When you upload an image to your blog to use in your blog post, you usually have the option of adding alternate text for that image which appears if a visitor cannot load your images in their Web browsers.  However, this alternate text, can also help your search engine optimization efforts.  That's because the alternate text appears within the HTML of your blog post content as something called an Alt-tag.  Google and other search engines crawl that tag and use it in providing results for keyword searches.  Take the time to add keywords that are relevant to the image and post in the Alt-tag for each image you upload and publish on your blog.
Use keywords throughout your blog posts.
Try to use your keywords (without keyword stuffing) multiple times in your blog post.  For best results, use your keywords within the first 200 characters of your blog post, several times throughout your post, and near the end of the post.  Take some time to learn more about keyword stuffing and other search engine optimization don'ts.

VOIP at your business at your Blogger

I am thinking of switching to VOIP for my business. Any suggestions for what may work? - James
VOIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol, is a technology that allows you to make traditional phone calls over the Internet. Skype is one of the VOIP services that you most likely have heard of or used.
The reasons for moving to a VOIP-based phone system usually include costs savings, integration with other web resources and flexibility when working with multiple locations.
The size of your business and what you plan to do with the system will be major factors in whether it makes sense for you and for finding the right solution.
If you are looking for an inexpensive way to add features such as integration with your smartphones, call screening, forwarding voice messages to e-mail or integrating the phone system with your operating software, VOIP may be your solution.
If you have locations in various cities but want to have a phone system that worked as if you were all in the same building, VOIP may be your solution.
VOIP, when done right is a beautiful thing, but when it's done poorly or on a shaky Internet connection, it can become a bit of a nightmare.
Your first evaluation point is making sure your Internet connection has enough bandwidth to accommodate your VOIP and traditional surfing needs together.
If you currently experience sporadic performance issues when going to websites or streaming audio or video, you may end up with a phone system that makes everyone sound like Max Headroom.
You can test your bandwidth and get a sense of how many simultaneous calls it can support at RingCentral's Connect Capacity test site.
Because VOIP relies upon your Internet connection to make calls, if your Internet service ever goes down, your ability to place and receive calls goes away as well. Make sure whatever you setup has some ability to automatically reroute your calls to voice mail or another phone should an outage occur.
If your business has mission-critical communication needs, you may want to keep at least one traditional telephone line that allows you the ability to communicate should an outage occur. It also may be the only way that 911 service will work as some VOIP providers don't offer it.
Depending upon which service/hardware combination you choose, you may need to upgrade your routers and/or switches in order to configure the QOS (Quality Of Service) settings that allow you to give higher prioriy to VOIP traffic.
If you have an office full of hardcore Pandora or YouTube users, you may have to adjust their behaviors to avoid creating congestion on your network that will result in poor call quality.
In the past, setting up a VOIP system for your business required expensive and complicated hardware and software as well as some significant setup processes.
Today, you can use hosted services that don't require all that complexity and expense because everything is done in the cloud.
For compatibility reasons, look for phone equipment that uses the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) standard so you aren't tied to any proprietary systems or providers.
For really basic small business needs, checkout the business plans at Vonage or for more features and options checkout RingCentral's various offerings. For more complex situations, checkout Vocalocity.
If you aren't much of a do-it-yourselfer, you'd be best served by consulting a professional that can help you navigate the complexities and help you make the best choice for your situation and budget.

9 Intelligent Queries to Ask Before You Seek Guidance on Credit Insurance Services

Business people across Australia face greater risks in today's economic climate than perhaps ever before. It only takes a few customers to default on payment and your business could suffer dramatically. At such times it makes sense to protect your assets and ensure the wheels keep turning. A solid credit management system can help maintain consistent levels of that all-important cash flow and take the burden of debt recovery off your shoulders.
Credit insurance services can provide the support and protection needed to cushion you from the unexpected as your business continues to develop. Before you sign on the dotted line, here are 9 vital questions you should ask.
1. How will credit insurance help my business?
Experts identify, protect and manage your cash flow to enable you to focus on making sales and growing your business.
2. Will it protect me against payment default from overseas customers?
As well as local and national protection, most insurance companies provide international coverage for accounts receivables in the form of export and political risk insurance.
3. How will I know if my business needs this?
Any company that provides credit terms to its customers benefits from insurance to protect itself from bad debts and default payments.
4. Will it cover all of my customers or selected clients only?
Coverage usually includes all customers invoice on open credit terms, although it is also possible to selectively designate high-risk customers up to a maximum indemnity level of around 90%.
5. How much will credit insurance cost me?
The cost of your policy will depend on your company turnover, number of customers, and the extent of your business at home and abroad. Typical coverage works out at 0.5% of your total insured turnover worked out over 12 months and payable in monthly installments. Policies are usually signed and effective for a one year period, renewed on an annual basis.
6. What amount of coverage will I receive?
Credit insurance coverage is calculated in terms of expected sales turnover and the payment terms offered to customers. For clients with sales turnover potential of AU$480,000 on payment terms of 60 days, the calculation would be AU$480,000/12 x 2 = AU$80,000.
7. How do I make a claim if customers fail to pay me?
If payment is not received within agreed time parameters, you can submit a claim form to your broker who will begin the claims process on your behalf.
8. Are credit insurance claims guaranteed to be paid?
All claims will be paid up to the indemnity level of outstanding invoices, provided the customers in question are covered under the terms of your particular policy.
9. Will brokers provide financial help and support throughout the term of the policy?
Your insurance experts will design a policy to meet your needs and assign a broker to your account from day one.
Contact your local credit insurance specialists today to find out more about the benefits and protection tailor-made credit insurance can provide for your business.
